All hairstylist must know the law of color, that is, the primary colors. These are the purest forms of colors found in nature: red, blue and yellow. Why would this be important? This colors cannot be mixed by any other color to be created, however, the primary colors are mixed together to make all the other colors. Secondary colors, are the color created when two primary colors are mixed together. Secondary colors are green, orange and violet. Tertiary colors are made when mixing primary colors with their neighboring secondary color.
Color Wheels:
A color wheel is a useful tool used to train hairstylist the position of colors in a circle in relation to the primary colors. On the color wheel, colors are classified as either warm or cool tones. Warm tones include any color with yellows to reds. Whereas cool colors are any with blue. Neutral is an equal balance between the two.
Why is this significant? These warm and cool colors, found on opposite sides of the wheel are called complementary colors. That is, the opposite color is often used to neutralize unwanted tones. This is important to hairstylist when coloring hair, they should know what colors to use to neutralize unwanted colors in their guest’s hair. An example would be a guest that has to warm of a color and wants to be more on the neutral to cool side, the stylist should know to use something that is cooler to tone the hair. This process is known as toning.
